How can you quit smoking? Do you have to try cold turkey, attend rehab, outpatient clinic, use a phone app, online course, support group? What’s the best strategy? Well, as I’m sure you know, there is no one size fits all. Treatment should be individualized. In this video, I talk about the Quit Smoking Formula, a proven strategy that utilizes the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy, directed action, mindset shift, medications, lifestyle changes, and a proven roadmap to help you quit smoking.
Over the last 15 years plus treating people with nicotine addiction, I have come to find out that many people who are able to curb this addiction tend to present with 2 things – A mindset shift and taking directed action.
This is what led me to develop the Quit Smoking Formula – QSF for short.
One major reason many people struggle to quit smoking is that they lack a proper system. A great strategy gives you a roadmap and makes this journey more bearable ……….. and sustainable. The Quit Smoking Formula is an online training course and community that utilizes 5 proven foundational roadmaps to help you quit smoking and live a happier and healthier smoke-free life. It gives you a systematic approach and step by step guide to quitting cigarettes and living like a nonsmoker.
You see, action in general, is commonplace. The right action, however, is not. It is not any kind of action that will do. What you need is directed action. Using step by step directed action frameworks, you can break your addiction to nicotine. You can stop smoking cigarettes forever.
Action requires courage and creative application. Not brashness or brute force. You must act with deliberation, persistence and boldness. Taking directed action is a crucial step to starting your journey to quit smoking. Empowering you with a mindset shift and incorporating tenets of lifestyle medicine will further solidify the process of getting you from smoking to living smoke-free.
This is what I call the Quit Smoking Formula. For short, QSF. It is made up of 5 steps which make up the acronym SMILE.
S stands for – Starting your smoke-free life – so that you can begin to feel better, look better, smell better, get healthier, experience more energy, save money and protect your loved ones from secondhand smoke.
M stands for – Mastering your mind – so that you can quit smoking easily without frustration
I stands for – Improving your chances to Quit once and for all – so that you do not relapse and return to this addiction.
L is for – Lifestyle Changes to heal your body – so that you can breathe better, engage in hobbies and physical activities and also spend quality time with family and friends.
E stands for – Ensuring long term success – so that you continue to live life as a happy non-smoker.
The Quit Smoking Formula is helpful if you smoke cigarettes or cigars, vape, chew tobacco, or use tobacco products or substitutes in other ways.
Under these 5 foundational modules, we have 5-7 short lessons. Most of the lessons are 5-6 minutes on average with some activity at the end of each short lesson. I’ve intentionally made the videos short and straight to the point so there is no fluff.
The first module talks about your why, the reasons you struggle to quit smoking, reframing your failures, setting yourself up for success and also teaches you how to set a quit date the right way.
Module 2 talks about how you can identify and manage your triggers, the power of habits, shifting your mindset, clarifying myths, the power of visualization and living a smoke-free life.
Module 3 discusses how you can relieve your nicotine withdrawals, proven ways to stop your cravings, tips for getting ready to quit, stress management, mental health and medications that can help you quit smoking.
Module 4 discusses how you can reverse the effects of smoking and heal your body with nutrition, supplements, exercise and sleep. We also discuss how to avoid weight gain.
The last module – module 5 talks about strategies to help you stay smoke-free, how to prevent relapse, alcohol as a trigger, how to become comfortable being uncomfortable, journaling, phone apps, support and accountability.
I have a free Facebook group called Quit Smoking Success Group and I did a survey to find out how many times people have made an attempt to stop smoking. Amongst those who took the survey, 14% said they had tried 1-3 times, 54% said they had tried 4-10 times and 32% said they had tried more than 10 times to quit smoking. The struggle is real!
One of the ways I encourage taking directed action is writing or journaling. I have a journal called The Breathe! Journal. I’m happy to send you a free pdf copy. If you are interested, simply follow me on Instagram and send me a DM with the word “Journal.”
